A U.S. court agreed on Thursday to release on bail former IMF head Dominique Strauss-Kahn who was charged with sexually assaulting a hotel maid last weekend in New York.

New York State Supreme Court Judge Michael Obus said that Strauss-Kahn can be released on $1 million cash bail, and placed under 24-hour house arrest.

Obus said there was "a serious risk" that the former IMF chief could attempt to flee the country and that if he managed to do so, "it might be impossible to get him back."

Strauss-Kahn, 62, announced his resignation earlier in the day. He was arrested last Sunday at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport after boarding a plane to Paris.

A grand jury indicted Strauss-Kahn on the assault charges earlier on Thursday. The former IMF head denies the charges. While announcing his resignation, he said he was going to "devote all my strength, all my time, and all my energy to proving my innocence."
