Former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak said on Tuesday he will apologize to his country for violently suppressing an anti-government uprising at the beginning of the year, the al-Shorouk daily said.

The paper said Mubarak was "drafting a letter which will be shown on Egyptian and Arabic channels, apologizing on behalf of himself and his family for any offence caused to the people."

The ousted leader will also beg for pardon "for any behavior that may have stemmed from false information passed to him by his advisers."

The paper quoted Arab and Egyptian official sources as saying that Mubarak is also going to transfer his foreign assets into the country.

Mubarak, 83, resigned on February 11 following an 18-day uprising that resulted in the deaths of more than 800 people. The military council that took power following Mubarak's resignation has pledged to bring to justice all former regime officials found guilty of abusing power.

The former president and his wife are currently under arrest in a hospital in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh after both of them suffered heart attacks during interrogation as part of a graft probe.

Al Jazeera said that on Monday that the former Egyptian first lady gave up a villa in Cairo to the Egyptian state and handed over $3.4 million from her two bank accounts.
