Military chiefs from the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) agreed on Monday to increase cooperation, China's Xinhua news agency said.

All SCO member states should work together to achieve mutual security and address common challenges, said Chen Bingde, chief of the general staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, who chaired the meeting in Shanghai.

SCO defense ministers signed a cooperation plan last month for the period 2012-2013.

Monday's gathering in Shanghai was the first ever meeting of SCO military chiefs. The organization, which was created mainly to address regional security concerns, marks its 10th anniversary this June.

The organization comprises China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Iran, India, Mongolia and Pakistan hold observer status.
