Syrian security forces entered the southern town of Daraa and opened fire, killing at least five protesters, Al Jazeera television reported on Monday.

Daraa saw the start of protests against President Bashar al-Assad's rule five weeks ago.

According to eyewitness reports, Syrian forces also stormed the Damascus suburb of Duma, shooting at unarmed civilians and arresting residents.

A total of 300 people may have been detained in sweeps over the past three days.

Although Assad lifted decades-long emergency laws, his security forces have continued to clash with protesters, killing over 100 Syrians on Friday.

Mass protests started in Daraa on the border with Jordan on March 18 in response to the arrest of a group of schoolchildren who placed anti-government graffiti on some walls. The unrest later spread to other Syrian regions.

At least 300 people have been killed in protests and clashes that have raged in the country since mid-March, according to Syrian opposition.

Public protests in the Middle East and North Africa have recently ousted regimes in Egypt and Tunisia, and led to a civil war in Libya.
