One out of 33 people on board of a UN aircraft that crashed on Monday at an airport in the Democratic Republic of Congo has survived, a UN press service said.

The plane broke in half and caught fire when the pilot tried to land in heavy rain.

A search and rescue efforts continue at the site of the crash, however neither the type of the aircraft, nor the nationality of those killed in the accident have been revealed. The cause of the accident has not been established yet.

Georgian TV reported earlier that the plane belonged to Georgia's Airzena airline, but this information has not been officially confirmed.

The plane had reportedly flown from Goma via Kisangani, a city in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
