Several Japanese car makers have extended their production shutdown after a powerful quake and tsunami hit the northeastern part of the country, NHK TV channel said on Tuesday.

Several Japanese car makers suspended the production after the 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan on March 11 and caused massive power outages across the country. Among them are Toyota, Subaru, Honda, Suzuki, Mazda and Mitsubishi.

Toyota is planning to restart production on March 26, while Honda Motors has extended a production shutdown until March 27. Nissan may restart production on March 24, NHK said.

The shutdown of the production could cost Toyota, whose Japan-based plants produce about 45% of the company's world output, a decrease in production of about 40,000 cars.

Experts from IHS Automotive Research Company said the halt in the Japanese car industry could affect the world's supply chains since Japan is the largest car exporter.
