Veterinarians in southern India conducted a two-hour life-saving surgery on a 5.5-foot cobra, Times of India said on Tuesday.

Last week, conservationist Vava Suresh from the city of Thiruvananthapuram found the half-dead reptile at a construction site on the city outskirts. A bulldozer had run over it puncturing its abdomen.

Suresh immediately took the snake to the local veterinary hospital, where it was successfully operated on.

"The surgery wasn't really complicated, but operations such as these rarely happen," a senior vet told the paper.

The cobra, which is considered a sacred animal in India, was prescribed "complete bed rest" and is expected to recover in a week.
