Several hundred people tried to storm an office of the state security service in central Cairo on Sunday to seize archives, which they suspect police wants to destroy, the local media said.

The police guarding the building barred entrance for the protesters, and the military fired their guns into the air to stop the clashes.

A group of protesters was later shown into the building escorted by the military to make sure that there were no security service officers or archive documents there to be destroyed.

Protesters have been calling for the security service to be abolished as a remainder of the 30-year regime of ousted President Hosni Mubarak.

Since Thursday, Egypt has been rocked by attacks on state security agencies on rumors that security officers were trying to destroy secret archives. Demonstrators got hold of some classified documents, which might shed light on the latest events in the Islamic country, media said.

Egypt's ruling Supreme Council has called on those holding the secret papers to give them back.
