Moscow’s Maslenitsa festival: A rival to the Carnival in Venice?

A temporary village for the Russian holiday of Maslenitsa, or Pancake Week, opened on Vasilyevsky Spusk square in Moscow on March 4. The holiday’s organizers expect about 300,000 visitors. A bazaar was set up near the walls of the Moscow Kremlin. Here visitors can buy thin, crepe-like pancakes with a variety of toppings: sour cream, honey, jam, caviar, or fish. They can also buy souvenirs, take part in sack fighting on a log, and traditional dancing.
