International Criminal Court Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo has said he is opening an investigation against alleged crimes against humanity during the violent crackdown on anti-government protests in Libya.

Conflicting reports say up to 6,000 people have so far died in the violence between the rebels and forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

"Tomorrow at a press conference in The Hague, the Prosecutor will present an overview of the alleged crimes committed in Libya since 15 February 2011 and preliminary information as to the entities and persons who could be prosecuted and put them on notice to avoid future crimes," a statement on the court's website says.

The Prosecutor has decided to launch the probe "following preliminary examination of available information," the statement says.

The United Nations suspended Libya's membership in its Human Rights Council on Tuesday.
