Tens of thousands of demonstrators converged Friday on Cairo's central Tahrir Square demanding the resignation of the cabinet appointed four weeks ago by President Hosni Mubarak before he stepped down.

The demonstrators also called for the lifting of emergency rule and the release of political prisoners still in custody, and demanded civilian representation in the government.

Some carried posters in support of the uprising in neighboring Libya, where opponents of Muammar Gaddafi have taken control of the eastern part of the country.

Meanwhile, thousands of workers throughout Egypt continue their strike for higher wages.

The military council, which took power in the country as Mubarak resigned, has dissolved the parliament and pledged to hold democratic elections by September. It has left the running of the government to a caretaker cabinet led by Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq, the former air force chief Mubarak promoted from aviation minister at the end of January.
