France decided to freeze assets of ousted Egyptian Pesident Hosni Mubarak and his family, French Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

France decided to freeze assets of ousted Egyptian Pesident Hosni Mubarak and his family, French Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

"Based on the United Nations convention on corruption, notably article 55, and in accordance with previous declarations, Michele Alliot-Marie has asked for this matter to be immediately transferred to the competent authorities so that a favourable response can be made," the ministry said in a statement

Mubarak stepped down on February 11 after 18 days of large-scale anti-government protests that broke out in Cairo and quickly spread throughout Egypt, leaving more than 350 people dead and about 5,500 injured.

Egypt asked the United States and European countries to freeze the assets of the country's ousted leader and his family and ordered an investigation into Mubarak's financial dealings.

Some media reports said Mubarak managed to shift his wealth estimated at between $40 billion and $70 billion to secret bank accounts.
