Police defused three bombs found in a car in Russia's North Caucasus Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, a day after an attack on tourists in the republic killed three and injured two people, a spokesman for the republican interior ministry said on Sunday.

Late on Saturday, the police spotted a suspicious VAZ car at the foot of Mount Cheget, one of the ski resorts in the republic. There was a gas tank with wire inside the car. For safety reasons, the police evacuated tourists from nearby hotels, the spokesman said.

"The bomb technicians who inspected the car found three homemade explosive devices inside the car and in its trunk, which they defused," the spokesman said.

On Friday, unknown assailants opened fire on a van carrying tourists from Moscow who headed for the Elbrus mountain area, another ski resort in Kabardino-Balkaria. Three people, including a woman, were killed and two others were injured.

Unconfirmed media reports said the fourth tourist later died in hospital. Russian prosecutors have earlier denied the report.

The president of Russia's North Caucasus republic of Kabardino-Balkaria has condemned the attack on Moscow tourists calling it a "kick in the teeth."

"This is not just an atrocious crime, this is a kick in the teeth to all the people of Kabardino-Balkaria, who consider hospitality as a cornerstone of their culture and lifestyle," Arsen Kanokov said.
