The average Moldovan consumes 18.22 liters of alcohol annually, three times more than the global average of 6.1 liters, according to WHO's Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health.

The organization also pointed out that Moldova, Israel, Croatia and Ukraine have special provisions in their state budgets for the treatment of alcoholism.

The top rating of the heaviest drinking nations also include the Czech Republic with an annual per capita alcohol consumption of 16.45 liters, Hungary (16.27 liters), Russia (15.76 liters), Ukraine (15.6 liters), Estonia (15.57 liters), Andorra (15.48 liters), Romania (15.3 liters), Slovenia (15.19 liters), Belarus (15.13 liters), and Britain (13.37 liters).

The report also said that "Globally, 6.2% of all male deaths are related to alcohol, compared to 1.1% of female deaths."

One in five men in Russia and some former Soviet republics die due to alcohol-related causes, the report said.
