The parliament of Kyrgyzstan approved the naming of a mountain peak in the Central Asian country's north after Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, the local news agency 24.kg said on Thursday.

The initiative to name the peak in the Chui Region belongs to local lawmakers and was supported by the Kyrgyz government.

The parliament approved the move by a majority vote and the peak, which is 4,446 meters (14,586 ft) in height, will now have the name of the Russian prime minister.

In 2002, Kyrgyzstan named a 3,500-meter peak near Lake Issyk-kul after late Russian president Boris Yeltsin for his contribution to the development of Russian-Kyrgyz relations.

The founder of the Soviet Union, Vladimir Lenin, boasts the tallest peak in Kyrgyzstan named after him, a 7,134meter-high peak on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border.
