The Supreme Council of the Egyptian armed forces reiterated on Monday its call to opposition activists and labor leaders to end protests and return to work.

On Monday several thousand people gathered on Cairo's central Tahrir Square, the heart of million-strong opposition protests that swept President Hosni Mubark from office on Friday, celebrating their victory and demanding future democratic reforms.

Thousands or workers, predominantly from state companies, went on strike over wages and working conditions.

"Such actions have negative consequences," the military council, which took power after Mubarak resigned on Friday, said in a statement read by a military spokesman on national television. "We hope that everyone will cooperate [with the authorities] in creating favorable circumstances for the running of the country in this period and transferring power to legal civilian authorities elected by the people."

On Sunday, the military council dissolved parliament and suspended the constitution. It has promised to hold democratic presidential and parliamentary elections in September.
