U.S. President Barack Obama will discuss the situation in Egypt with his state security advisors within a few hours, a pool report quoted White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs as saying.

The meeting will come after Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's televised speech late on Thursday, in which he said he was handing over presidential powers to Vice President Omar Suleiman, but did not resign.

Obama watched Mubarak's speech in the conference room of his plane on the way to Washington from Michigan, the report said.

Speaking at an unrelated event in Northern Michigan University earlier on Thursday, Obama expressed support for Egypt's "young people."

"What is absolutely clear is that we are witnessing history unfold," Obama said. "It's a moment of transformation that's taking place because the people of Egypt are calling for change. America will continue to do everything that we can to support an orderly and genuine transition to democracy in Egypt."
