Some 60% of Russians support the decision to scrap the annual shift to winter time, a poll indicated.

Russia will stick to summer time and not switch to daylight saving time on the last Sunday of October as it has done since 1981, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Tuesday.

"I decided to cancel the shift to winter time, starting from this autumn," he said.

Daylight saving time is practiced in every European country except Iceland, as well as in many other countries around the world to save energy. The first recorded time change in Russia was in 1917.

Pollsters from by the superjob.ru website quizzed 1,600 respondents throughout Russia.
