The Russian Investigation Committee (IC) denied allegations on Wednesday that it tortured a suspect in the murder of eight people in the southern Russian city of Stavropol.
The bodies of five men and three women with gunshot and stab wounds were found on January 21 in a house belonging to the boss of a local criminal group. Roman Gubarev was arrested on suspicion of committing the crime.
Media reports quoting Gubarev's relatives accused investigators in the case of using torture to force the suspected murderer to confess.
"All investigations are being conducted under according to criminal procedure legislation," Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said.
The killings came just two months after the bodies of 12 people, including eight adults and four children, were found in a house in the village of Kushchevskaya, in the southern Krasnodar region. The leader of another local criminal gang has been charged with organizing the murders.
