Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Syrian counterpart Muhammad Naji Utri on Sunday laid the foundation stone for a Friendship Dam on Turkish-Syrian border.

The dam, which is estimated at $28.5 million, will be constructed on the Orontes River, which flows from Lebanon to Syria and Turkey. The dam is designed to irrigate 10,000 hectares of agricultural fields and generate 16 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.

Relations between the Mediterranean neighbors saw a strong improvement following an official visit by Syrian President Bashar Assad to Ankara in 2004. Later, Syria and Turkey abolished their visa regimes. The constriction of the Friendship Dam indicates further buildup of ties between Syria and Turkey.
