The New York Star tanker has been twice attacked by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean, but the attempts were thwarted, the Maritime Assistance Center said on Saturday.

The pirates tried to board the Liberian-flagged tanker, carrying 55,000 tons of naphtha from Saudi Arabia to Singapore, on Friday.

The vessel, with two Russians and three Ukrainians onboard, was escorted by the Russian Pacific Fleet's destroyer Admiral Vinogradov, but left the convoy on January 26.

It was attacked by the pirates on Friday some 540 miles to the northwest of the Indian Island of Kavaratti, but escaped.

The pirates later managed to board the vessel but were unable to get control over the 27 crew members who had locked themselves in the ship's 'citadel.'

The attack was thwarted with the help of a Dutch frigate.

No crew members were hurt in the incident.
