Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Wednesday that he will decide this year on his participation in the 2012 presidential elections in Russia.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Wednesday that he will decide this year on his participation in the 2012 presidential elections in Russia.

"I will look at the developments," Medvedev said in an interview with Bloomberg TV before addressing the annual World Economic Forum in Davos.

He added that his decision will depend on a number of reasons and circumstances.

"If I consider it appropriate for the country, the political system and first of all for Russian citizens, I will participate in the elections. If I consider it different, I will say this openly and will also say what, in my opinion, is better for the society and state," Medvedev said.

After holding the presidential post for two terms from 2000 to 2008, current Prime Minister Vladimir Putin picked Medvedev as his successor and took the position of prime minister for himself.

Both men have hinted that one of them, but not both, will run in the forthcoming elections.

In 2009, Russian legislature extended to six years the presidential term in office from its previous four-year term.
