Thousands of Belgians took to the streets on Sunday protesting against the country's long-running political crisis and the absence of federal government for months.

Belgium has been without the government for 224 days as the politicians from the country's Dutch-and French-speaking regions have so far failed to come to a consensus.

In January, the country hosting the European Union headquarters broke the record for facing the longest political crisis in Europe. The previous one - 208 days - was held by the Netherlands in 1977.

At least 15,000 people are taking part in the demonstration which has been called by five Belgians in protest of the politicians' failure to break the seven-month deadlock.

The protesters chant "We want a government," "Separation is not for us" addressing the speculation that the country could simply break apart if no breakthrough is reached.
