British police have begun investigating four Russians from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for alleged involvement in criminal activities, the bank said in a statement on Tuesday.

On the request of the British Foreign Office, the London-based bank lifted the immunity of the four suspects, who were sent to work in the bank by the Russian government.

The bank has refused to identify the Russian nationals but said they all either worked for, or had been working for, the bank on behalf of the Russian government.

Before lifting the immunity of the four employees, the bank carried out its own investigation and sent the results to the Russian authorities in accordance with the bank's code of conduct.

The Russian side is also carrying out an investigation, Russia's Ministry of Economic Development said. In particular, Russian police are conducting checks into the activities of former EBRD Russia Board Director, Elena Kotova, who resigned in December.
