Russia's national rugby team beat New Zealand local side Taranaki 33:24 on Saturday, in the first of a two game tour of New Zealand in the lead up to the Rugby World Cup Tournament there in the fall.

Russia's Vladimir Ostroushko made the first seven points with assistance from his teammate Igor Klyuchnikov during the first of three periods of play at Clifton Rugby Ground in Taranaki, each lasting 30 minutes instead of the usual two halves of 40 minutes each.

The New Zealanders had a fierce time defending during the second period as Ostrouskho and Alexander Yanyukhkin twice made scoring combinations, converted by Yury Kushnaryov, bringing the score to 7:26 in Russia's favor by the end of the second time.

Russia was able to gain a comfortable lead in the third period after several attacks by Vasily Artyomev, bringing the score to 19:33 with little time for Taranaki to maneuver and take control of the game.

Russia's star try scorers were Vladimir Ostrouskho (two), Alexander Yankyushkin, Valery Tsnobiladze, Vasily Artyomev (one each), with conversions by Igor Klyuchnikov and Yury Kushnaryov (two each) and Alexander Yanyushkin making one.

Russia will go on to play South Canterbury in Timaru on January 21.

Russia will make its debut appearance at a Rugby World Cup when the tournament is held in New Zealand in September and October 2011. Russia is in Pool C along with Australia, Ireland, Italy and the United States.
