About 30 people were detained in Moscow on Thursday as they protested the jailing of prominent opposition leader Boris Nemtsov.

Police detained 24 people who had gathered outside the jail in southern Moscow where Nemtsov is being held and at least another three were arrested on Red Square as they attempted to stage an unsanctioned picket.

Boris Nemtsov, 51, a former deputy prime minister, was detained for taking part in an anti-Kremlin protest on New Year's Eve. He was sentenced to 15 days in jail for "disobeying police" although the demonstration was officially sanctioned.

Police said he was detained when he crossed from an approved demonstration to an unsanctioned one also being held in Triumfalnaya Square.

Nemtsov said his jailing was "an attempt to frighten the opposition and frighten my family."
