The U.S. President Barack Obama's press secretary, Robert Gibbs, said he plans to resign from his post, CNN TV channel reported.
"It's always hard, but it's the right time for me to step back and recharge ahead of the next couple years," Gibbs said.
Gibbs said he will leave White House in the beginning of February after the State of the Union address later this month.
He will support White House positions on cable television and in speeches.
Obama in a telephone interview with the New York Times said Gibbs had been "extraordinary" at his post and would "continue to shape the dialogue politically for many years to come."
Although, no decision has been made about his replacement, Gibbs said told to CNN, however, there are several candidates to become his successor, including deputy press secretary Bill Burton and another deputy, Josh Earnest.
Gibbs, 39, began working for the future president's team when Obama ran for the U.S. Senate in 2004. Then he was Obama's spokesman during the 2008 presidential campaign.
