Police in Egypt believe the explosive device detonated near a Coptic Christian Church in Alexandria early on Saturday, killing at least 21 and injuring another 80, was activated by a suicide bomber.

According to new information from Egyptian police, the explosive device was not detonated in one of the parked cars next to the church or near the road. Earlier reports said a car bomb next to the church had exploded.

"Most likely an explosive device was on one of the individuals who was killed along with the others," Egypt's MENA news agency quoted police as saying.

Adel Ali Labib, the governor of the Alexandria region, said that angered Christian worshippers began casting stones at a nearby mosque beginning a rampage.

The international terrorist group al-Qaeda earlier threatened Egyptian Christians with an attack.

Coptic Christians account for approximately 10% of Egypt's population of 80 million.
