Moscow may resume participation in NATO's Active Endeavour anti-terrorist operations in the Mediterranean Sea, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said on Thursday.

Under Active Endeavour, which was launched after the September 11 attacks, NATO ships patrol the Mediterranean Sea, monitoring shipping to help detect, deter and protect against terrorist activity. Russia temporarily withdrew from participation in the project this summer.

"The resumption of Russia's participation in the Active Endeavour operation is possible," Grushko said.

He emphasized that Russia and NATO understand that they should "work together to settle the aftermath of the Cold War."

Speaking about practical cooperation between Russia and the alliance in 2011, Grushko said that the parties would strive against proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and piracy as well as working together to tackle the problems of Afghanistan.
