Russia and India intend to develop cooperation in the nuclear sphere, the Russian president and Indian prime minister said in a joint statement on Tuesday.

"The sides have expressed satisfaction over the development of bilateral nuclear cooperation and hope for further widening and strengthening of ties in this sphere," the statement, issued after Dmitry Medvedev and Manmohan Singh's meeting in New Delhi, said.

During the meeting, the sides discussed preparations for the launch of the first two units of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in southern India, one of the largest joint projects between the countries.

The Russian side welcomed India's decision to create a global nuclear partnership center, the document said. Russia and India also expressed their readiness to cooperate with third countries in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Russia is ready to facilitate India's accession to the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), an international body that controls exports of radioactive materials in order to reduce nuclear proliferation, the statement said.

Russia and India said all countries should comply with international non-proliferation obligations and stressed the key role of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in assuring nuclear security.

The head of the Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom, Sergei Kiriyenko, told journalists after the talks that India has reaffirmed its readiness to provide Russia a third plot of land for the construction of nuclear reactors. Russia is planning to build a total of 18 reactors in India, he said.
