Police are beginning to leave Moscow's Manezh Square, where they were stationed after a tip-off of a recurrence of Saturday's nationalist riots.

Police are beginning to leave Moscow's Manezh Square, where they were stationed after a tip-off of a recurrence of Saturday's nationalist riots.

"There have been no incidents on Manezh Square and police units are now leaving," a police spokesman said. "The general situation in the city is calm and is under police control."

The shopping mall under Manezh Square, which lies beside the Kremlin walls, and the entrance to the nearby Okhotny Ryad metro station were closed.

Over 5,000 football fans and nationalists gathered on the square on Saturday to protest the death of Yegor Sviridov, a Spartak Moscow fan who was shot dead earlier in December in a fight between football fans and a group of men from the North Caucasus.

Aslan Cherkessov, 26, from the North Caucasus republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, has been formally accused of the killing and placed in custody until February 6.
