Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed on Saturday a decree on additional law enforcement measures in the country following recent violations in several Russian regions.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed on Saturday a decree on additional law enforcement measures in the country following recent violations in several Russian regions.

The decree was prompted by "the necessity to boost crime prevention efforts", Medvedev said at a session of the Russian Security Council.

Under the decree, Russian governors and other top officials will hold coordination meetings on law enforcement in their regions on the permanent basis, the president added.

These meetings will analyze the current situation and the work of local law enforcement agencies and executive bodies.

"The recent events have revealed not very adequate response of several regional heads to developments in these territories," the president said referring to the November massacre in a south Russian village.

The bodies of 12 people, including eight adults and four children, were found in a house in the village of Kushchevskaya, Krasnodar region, on November 5. The adults were stabbed to death, three of the children were strangled and the other died of smoke inhalation.

Commissions of the Russian Investigation Committee, Interior Ministry and the Prosecutor General's Office are currently investigating the brutal murder and related crimes.

"Governors in some regions even do not know what is going on. In other regions they do but cannot take any serious measures against crime," Medvedev said adding that he decided to meet the governors' request and give them an opportunity to coordinate law enforcement efforts.

The president said that the new decree does not shift responsibility for crime prevention to executive bodies from law enforcement agencies.

Alexander Tkachev, governor of the Krasnodar territory, said the decree will make crime prevention at the regional level more effective.
