Some 1,000 Spartak Moscow supporters blocked traffic on a busy road in the north of the Russian capital on Tuesday evening after the death of a well-known fan in a brawl.

The fans blocked Leningradskoye Highway - one of the city's busiest roads - to demand a thorough investigation into the death of Spartak fan Yegor Sviridov, killed in a street brawl in the capital early on Monday.

The head of Moscow's special purpose police detachment (OMON), Vyacheslav Khaustov, took part in the efforts to persuade the fans to eventually move from the highway to the sidewalk.

Moscow police spokesman Viktor Biryukov said no one was arrested, but unofficial reports claimed over 20 people were detained.

Investigators say Sviridov was killed by four shots from a rubber-bullet pistol fired by Aslan Cherkesov. The incident happened during a mass brawl between Spartak fans and internal migrants from Russia's North Caucasus region.
