The death toll from an outbreak of cholera in Haiti has exceeded 2,000 people, the Caribbean country's health ministry said on Monday, amid concerns that the real figure may be much higher.

A total of 88,789 people have contracted the disease since it broke out in mid-October.

Experts from the World health Organization (WHO) warn that the figure may soar to 400,000 within the next few months.

More than $160 million in aid is needed over the next year to quash the outbreak, the United Nations said.

Haiti is still struggling to cope with the aftermath of an earthquake that killed over 250,000 people in January.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has advised Russians against traveling to Haiti.
