Julian Assange, the enigmatic founder of the whistleblower website WikiLeaks, is currently lying low in south-east England, The Independent said on Thursday.

It also said that Scotland Yard was waiting for instructions to arrest him.

The 39-year-old Assange is wanted by Swedish authorities on rape charges. He denies the allegations.

On November 20 Interpol issued a "red notice", or international wanted persons alert, for Assange. An Interpol "red notice" is equivalent in meaning to an international arrest warrant and any member state that knows the whereabouts of an individual on the list is required to arrest him.

WikiLeaks recently dumped a fresh trench of confidential U.S. cables containing unflattering comments about many world leaders. The release of the documents came after revelations on Iraq and Afghanistan.

The paper said that the Scotland Yard has been in contact with Assange's legal team for more than a month. "Police sources confirmed that they have a telephone number for Mr Assange and are fully aware of where he is staying."

Britain's Serious Organized Crime Agency (Soca) received the "red notice" late on December 1 and is awaiting "technical clarifications" before sanctioning Assange's arrest, the paper said.
