The death toll from an outbreak of cholera in Haiti has reached 1,721 people, the Caribbean country's health ministry said on Monday, as efforts continue to contain the disease.

The report comes a day after Haitians went to the polls to vote in presidential elections amid allegations of fraud.

A total of 75,888 people have contracted the disease since it broke out in mid-October. Artibonite, with 750 deaths, remains the hardest hit region, while 162 people have died in the capital Port-au-Prince.

Haiti is still struggling to cope with the aftermath of an earthquake that killed over 250,000 people on January 25.

More than $160 million in aid is needed over the next year to quash the outbreak, the United Nations said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has advised Russians against traveling to Haiti.
