Georgian policemen have opened investigations into two explosions which have occurred on Saturday night in Tbilisi, a statement by the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs said.
The first bomb went off at 01.30 a.m. local time in the center of the city in a close proximity to the office of the Georgian opposition Labor Party. Party member Nino Gordeziani, 65, was killed, and one more person, the security guard of the office, was injured in the blast.
Another blast occurred near a supermarket in the outskirts of the city smashing the windows of the nearby blocks of flats, the ministry's statement said without defining further details of the explosion.
'The results of the primary expertise...have shown that the same explosive agent was used in the both cases," the ministry's statement said.
Surveillance camera footage showing a man who had allegedly planted the bomb near the Labor Party's office was handed to the police, Soso Shatberashvili, a Labor party leader, said.
"This is political terror as the office of one of Georgia's main opposition parties has been blown up. The powerful explosive device was planted directly at the office's wall. Only the military or security services can have such explosives," Shatberashvili said.
The Georgian opposition has been staging regular protests in the country to demand the resignation of President Mikheil Saakashvili over allegations of corruption and increasing authoritarianism.
Saakashvili's popularity has plummeted since the August 2008 military incursion into breakaway South Ossetia, which led to a conflict with Russia.
The president has also been widely accused of failing to make good on promises to carry out democratic reforms after the 2003 "Rose Revolution" that brought him to power.
