Rubin Kazan beat FC Copenhagen 1-0 in Kazan on Wednesday evening to keep their faint hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League alive.

The notoriously goal-shy Russian club scored from the penalty spot just before the break. Christian Noboa’s spot-kick was only the second goal the club has scored in five Champions League games this season. Their other goal was also a penalty - against Barcelona in a 1-1 draw.

The victory was also their first ever home win in the Champions League.

To make the next stage, Rubin now need to repeat their famous 2009 victory against Barcelona in Spain, and hope that Copenhagen fail to defeat bottom club, Panathinakos.

They could also go through if they draw in Spain and Copenhagen lose at home to the Greeks.

Failing this, Rubin are guaranteed a place in the Europa League.
