The wedding of Britain's Prince William and Kate Middleton is to take place on April 29 at Westminster Abbey, Clarence House said on Tuesday.

The couple announced their engagement, made during a holiday to Kenya in October, last week.

The main costs of the wedding will be shared between the royal family and the bride's family.

Prince William and Catherine Elizabeth Middleton, both 28, first met in 2001 when they were students at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.

Beginning their relationship in 2002, the couple broke up briefly in April 2007, despite widespread speculation that they were close to getting married.

Middleton has attended many high-profile royal events, making it into numerous "best dressed" lists. Recently, the two have spent most of their time in north Wales, where Prince William is serving in the Royal Air Force.

An opinion poll shows that 55 percent of Britons want Prince William rather than his father Prince Charles, 62, to be their next King. Only 19 percent support Charles, who has been the longest serving heir to the throne in British history, to take his position.
