The monument, to go up in Moscow’s Poklonnaya Gora memorial park, also called Victory Park, will feature two Soviet soldiers, Georgian Meliton Kantaria and Russian Mikhail Yegorov, who hoisted a Soviet flag over the Reichstag during the Battle of Berlin in May 1945.
Both men will be in front of a wall modeled after the 46-meter Soviet-era Glory Memorial, which was demolished on December 19, 2009, in Kutaisi, Georgia’s second-largest city.
Fifteen bas-reliefs representing the main monuments to World War II heroes in the capitals of the former Soviet republics are presented behind the pedestal.
There will be benches all around the illuminated monument.
The monument’s foundation has already been laid. The bronze sculptures will soon be completed at a foundry in Zhukovsky near Moscow. The entire composition is to be assembled by December 10. The memorial, including the wall and the bas-reliefs, will stand 14 meters tall.
