The Polish Prosecutor General’s Office has appealed to the Warsaw District Court to decide on the extradition of Chechen separatist leader Akhmed Zakayev wanted on terrorist charges by Russia, Polish media said on Thursday.

The Polish Prosecutor General’s Office has appealed to the Warsaw District Court to decide on the extradition of Chechen separatist leader Akhmed Zakayev wanted on terrorist charges by Russia, Polish media said on Thursday.

Zakayev, who was in Poland in September to attend a Chechen congress, was freed by a Warsaw district court several hours after he was arrested at Russia's request.

Polish prosecutors asked the district court to extend Zakayev's arrest for 40 days but their petition was rejected because Zakayev has political refugee status in Britain, which is valid throughout the entire territory of the European Union.

“We sent to the district court a Russian request together with our position in which we ask to make a decision over the possible extradition [of Zakayev],” Polish media cited the spokeswoman for the Prosecutor’s Office as saying.

Whatever the decision the Polish Court makes, it will only be valid in Poland. If Poland approves the request, Zakayev could be under threat of extradition only if he came to Poland.
