A session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly emphasized on Tuesday the importance of relations with Russia.

"Relations with Russia are very important. They should develop in a balanced and rational way so as to produce positive results," Grzegorz Schetyna, speaker of the Polish parliament, said on the last day of the session.

On the issue of Ukraine's and Georgia's admission to the bloc, he said it "has always been committed to an open doors policy" despite the fact that Kiev and Tbilisi "will not become NATO members in the foreseeable future."

The session, which opened on Friday, has brought together some 340 parliamentarians from 28 NATO member countries from North America and Europe, as well as from the partner states.

A delegation of Russian officials, led by the head of the lower house defense committee, attended the session.

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has repeatedly said the bloc wants Russia to be part of a missile defense plan for Europe, but Russia says a serious assessment of missile risks should be carried out before embarking on the project.
