Russia has done more research on the Arctic seabed in a bid to renew its claim for the region's minerals resources, the deputy head of the Geology Department of the Natural Resources Ministry said on Saturday.

Russia has done more research on the Arctic seabed in a bid to renew its claim for the region's minerals resources, the deputy head of the Geology Department of the Natural Resources Ministry said on Saturday.

Daria Vasilevskaya told RIA Novosti the new research was necessary as details of previous expeditions were labeled secret due to the use of military equipment.

"It was not possible to give a full description of the military technical equipment on account of secrecy," Vasilevskaya said.

The new research was done on board the ship Akademik Fyodorov from July through October. Only civilian equipment was used, Vasilevskaya said.

Russia submitted a territorial claim for the Lomonosov Ridge to the United Nations in 2001 but it was turned down over a lack of evidence. Norway, Canada, Denmark and the United States have also laid claims to the territory.

The countries are seeking proof that the territory is an underwater extension of their continental shelves.

"Russia submitted a claim to the UN without specifying the methods of research and without disclosing the technical characteristics of the equipment used, but this did not satisfy the UN," Vasilevskaya said.

Russia plans to resubmit its claim in 2014.
