About 4,000 members and supporters of Russia's Communist Party gathered in downtown Moscow on Sunday to celebrate the 83rd anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution.

More than 1,200 police and 1,700 interior troops provided security at the Communists' rally, which was held without any excesses, the Moscow interior department said.

Russia no longer officially celebrates the anniversary of the 1917 Revolution that brought Vladimir Lenin to power and established communist rule in Russia and the Soviet Union over seven decades.

The November 7 celebration has been replaced by Unity Day, which is celebrated on November 4 and marks liberation of Russia from Polish invaders in 1612.
