The Georgian parliament will discuss  a bill on Thursday to ban Soviet symbols and impose job restrictions on former KGB officers and top Communist Party officials.

The so-called Freedom Charter was put forward by Giya Trotladze, chairman of the opposition party, Strong Georgia.

The charter also proposes a series of antiterrorist measures, including protection measures for strategic buildings and borders and monitoring imports and large financial transfers.

"This bill threatens terrorists, hostile agents and anyone who harbors Soviet ideology," Trotladze said.

The clause stipulating a ban on Soviet symbols was included into the charter last week. The proposal was met with criticism from a number of Georgian deputies, mainly because it would pose a threat to a number of Georgian Soviet-era buildings including the country's parliament.

"Are you suggesting we demolish our parliament?" asked Deputy Speaker Levan Vepkhvadze.
