More than 272,000 people have been evacuated in China as powerful Typhoon Megi has hit the country's southeast, Xinhua reported.

The storm, the strongest northwest Pacific cyclone in two decades, caused landslides in Zhangzhou City in China's southeastern province of Fujian.

There have been no immediate reports on casualties. At least 23 people on Chinese tour groups remain unaccounted for as a result of the disaster, CNN said.

Earlier this week, Megi swept through Philippines and Taiwan, killing at least 26 and 11 people, respectively, and destroying thousands of houses in some regions.

The storm is expected to move northward at 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) per hour and further weaken to become a tropical depression, Xinhua quoted a forecast made by the National Meteorological Center.

Megi will also bring heavy rains to Fujian's neighboring provinces of Guangdong and Zhejiang, meteorologists said.
