One policeman was killed on Saturday and two injured in an apparent suicide bombing in the southern Russian republic of Dagestan, an Interior Ministry spokesman said, while some reports said as many as 10 people were injured.

Hospital officials in the city of Khasavyurt, where the explosion occurred, said 10 people had been brought to the emergency department, while city police said seven people had been hurt.

The police source said that many soldiers and police officers received minor bruises, so the information on the number of victims could continue to change.

The Dagestani Interior Ministry spokesman said a UAZ off-road vehicle full of explosives tried to enter a school compound that is being used by a military unit. It crashed into a roadblock and exploded.

Investigators are working at the scene.

According to the National Anti-Terrorist Committee, more than half of all terrorist attacks in the North Caucasus in 2010 have occurred in Dagestan.

The committee reported that in August and September alone, counterterrorism and special operations in Dagestan have resulted in the deaths of 82 suspected criminals or militants.
