The use of nuclear weapons mean the end of humanity, Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro said in a video address released on the Cubadebate website on Thursday.

"The use of nuclear weapons in a new war would mean the end of humanity," Castro said.

In his 4-minute video, Castro stressed that tensions in the Middle East, in particular an attack on Iran by the United States and Israel, would lead to a global nuclear war, bringing an end to humanity.

"Today there is imminent risk of war with the use of that kind of weapon and I don't harbor the least doubt that an attack by the United States and Israel against the Islamic Republic of Iran would inevitably evolve towards a global nuclear conflict," he said.

Castro has called on world powers to eliminate all nuclear and conventional weapons.

"Let us have the courage to proclaim that all nuclear or conventional weapons, everything that is used to make war, must disappear!" Castro said.

"I do not know with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones," Castro quoted Albert Einstein as once saying. "We fully understand what he wanted to convey and he was absolutely right, but there wouldn't be anybody around to make use of those sticks and stones," he added.

North Korea and Iran have been under international sanctions over their nuclear developments.

Although North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has repeatedly stated his commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, the reclusive communist regime appears to be making steady progress in nuclear research and development.

Iran has stepped up uranium exploration in the central and southern regions of the country.

Self-efficiency in uranium production is important for Iran as the country is defiantly pursuing its controversial nuclear program despite four sets of UN Security Council sanctions.

At present, the Islamic Republic has about 5,000 metric tons of confirmed national reserves of uranium.

The 84-year-old Cuban revolutionary leader, who has rarely been seen in public since ceding power to his younger brother Raul in 2008, made a series of public appearances in summer.

On September 3, he delivered his first public speech since 2006, where he also called on all countries to give up nuclear weapons, speaking on the steps of the University of Havana before a crowd of several thousand people, mostly students.

The former Cuban leader called on the world to take into account Russia's opinion. "Russia is a mighty nuclear power, its opinion should not be ignored," he said.
