Two people were killed and five injured after two cars collided in the Moscow Region, to the west of the Russian capital.

Two people were killed and five injured after two cars collided in the Moscow Region, to the west of the Russian capital, a police spokesman said on Friday.

The head-on collision between Lada and Subaru cars occurred late on Thursday night near the village of Uvarovka in the Moscow Region's Mozhaiisky district, he said.

Those killed in the accident were two 17- and 18-year-old women from the Lada car. Two more people from this car and three people from the Subaru car were hospitalized with multiple injuries, the spokesman said.

Police officers work at the scene of the accident to establish the cause of the tragic crash, he added.

According to statistics, 30,000 people lose their lives in traffic accidents every year in Russia due to the poor state of highway networks and reckless driving.

The Russian government moved to improve road safety in 2006, launching a six-year federal program aimed at preventing road accidents.
