European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek called on Ukrainian authorities to cooperate with the country's opposition during his meeting with the country's prime minister, Ukrainian media reported.

"Ukraine needs to stick firmly to democratic principles and standards, not only in words but in deeds, it is very important for our cooperation," Buzek told reporters after a bilateral meeting with Ukraine's Prime Minister Mykola Azarov in Brussels, Kyiv Post said.

He said constructive cooperation between the government and the opposition was needed to maintain a long-term political stability and economic development. It would also contribute to the fight against corruption and strengthen the rule of law.

The Ukrainian premier said, in his turn, that he was ready for a dialog with the opposition.

"I told President [Viktor Yanukovych] that my dream is to cooperate with the opposition, to cooperate constructively. I am asking Mr. President to appeal to our opposition and urge it for constructive cooperation. We are ready," Azarov said.
